Hair Care.

IMG_1596wFinally, a post about my hair and the hair products I use from time to time and/or every day :)

If you didn’t know I used to have long long hair back in the days I started the blog. It was always thick, resistant and looked and felt so healthy. I used a lot of heat products (couldn’t go out without blow drying and flat ironing it), I mean, there has to be a reason why I was known as the hair freak in high school.. my friends even made jokes about me needing an entire hour before leaving the house. But no matter how much heat I used, it looked good all the time because I used a lot of hair treatments to keep it in good shape.
After moving to New York, my hair routine changed because I had little to no free time to take care of it. I just kept using heat tools, bleaching, dyeing it (I dye it by myself, you can read how on this faq) and all but stopped conditioning it. I literally forgot I needed some treatment to make it up for all the damage. Then I decided to bleach the hell out of it and went almost entirely blonde. I loved the result and the drastic change felt really good but left my hair so delicate and thin. I, once again, thought it would get better but my hair was everything but healthy. It just kept getting shorter and shorter. I thought there was a spell on me that didn’t let my hair grow. So I tried on extensions. They were cool and cute but they felt fake as well. Under all those long locks my hair was everything but long. So I took them off and a few months ago I decided to stop complaining and face the problem. I researched about all the products and bought the ones that looked promising. I tried really expensive ones and cheap ones as well and started taking care of my hair in general. All I can say is I’m surprised with the results. It’s completely different now, it looks so much healthy and it grows so bloody fast.

Here is a breakdown of what I kept and became part of my routine:
Processed with VSCOcam with f2 preset

(Keep in mind my hair is dry by nature and not oily at all)

1. RUSK Deep Shine Color Shampoo and Conditioner: This has to be the best shampoo I’ve tried, Its sulphate free which keeps my red hair from fading and smell so good. I generally feel my hair stiff and dry when I put on shampoo but this one is completely the opposite.

2. TRESemme Color Revitalize Conditioner: I actually tried this conditioner when I just moved to New York. I was staying in my boyfriends apartment and had to buy some conditioner on the go. I swear by life i fell in love and still use it today. Its the best one for detangling and leaving it super soft. I even feel it works as a hair conditioning treatment.

3. Carrot Growth Oil Moisturizer: I bought this in a cheap drugstore around my apartment. I wear it when I’m not going to be doing much as it really leaves my hair oily. It works as a stay in treatment for me but man it doesnt look nice when you use it. I put it on for 24 hours and put my hair on a bun so it doesnt show how bad it looks, but I think this was one of the main reasons my hair grew much faster.

4. Rosemary Oil: This ladies and gentlemen, is the best thing on earth. I researched oils in general for hair growth and I kept getting Rosemary oil as the answer. I bought it thinking it was one of those myths, but I was hell wrong. I put it on from roots to tips (I have very dry hair so it doesnt looks too oily) and leave it as a shine serum. I also poured some of this on my shampoo and conditioner.

5. Bye Bye Frizz Blow Dry Cream: The best hair cream for blow drying by far. When I don’t use this thing the hair brush doesn’t run smoothly. Its like magic. You don’t need to have frizzy hair to use this as it just works as a smoothing cream when you’re going to blow dry your hair. I even stopped flat ironing my hair sometimes because this and a blowdryer was enough.

6. RUSK Deep Shine Masque and Neutrogena Triple Moisture Deep Recovery Hair mask: The two hair conditioning treatments I use once a week. Basically alternate between these two. I put them on my hair for 5 minutes in the shower.

7. UNA Silker Serum: After I blow dry my hair I use this as a shining finish.  Its not too thick so I apply more than just a drop. It helps close the ends and gives my hair that extra shine it needs before heading out.

8. RUSK Deep Shine Smooth Serum: I use this one before using the flat iron as it protects hair from heat styling.  It smells so so good and it smoothes my hair so much… closing the cuticle and making it look more silky. This one is a little thicker so I try to use a small amount.

If theres one advice from all of this is you have to love that part you don’t like (hair or skin, body, whatever makes you unhappy) and take care of it as much as possible and with time you’ll see results.

  • Ur blog is so rad! Love it!

  • This just saved my life. I added a lot of blonde last weekend and I’ve been crying ever since because my hair is so dry :p
    Thank you so so much.

  • You can add a note about dyeing your hair? :)

Me haria extremadamente feliz

  • Dear Lua!
I’m so happy that you write such a post. I was waiting for it, and this post gives me a lot of help! But there’s one thing that I want to ask from you. It’s about the color of your hair. Fist is that you dye your hair by yourself, or you have an amazing hairdresser? Because your hair color is so amazing, and to be honest, your hair the color of it and everything is my dream hair. And my second question is, that what type/brand of hair dye you (or your hairdresser) use? I’m asking it, because I love orange, but I have never ever found the perfect hair dye, not even my hairdresser, because everytime I get my hair dyed, the color comes out after 2 or 3 washing. And I don’t know what to do with it. And I also have a third question, and it is that is your hair totally blonde under the red color? I hope you’ll answer my questions! :) Anyway, I love your blog, and style, keep up with it! :)

    • Hi Kate,
Ive explained it many many times.. I dye my hair by myself and use Adore in truly red. I only dye the top part and leave the tips blonde. hope this helps!

      • Thank you very much for your answer Lua, it helped a lot! And so you don’t use orange hair dye, just red? I thought you’re using orange too. Anyway, I think, I’m going to buy and try Adore hair dye now, so thank you again for it! :)

      • I have one more question. Truly red on picture looks really light, more than on your head. Are you dyeing this truly red on blond or brown/dark color?

        • exactly. It looks bright but thats why it works on brown hair, if you add a dark red shade to brown hair it will turn a very dark red!

  • Love the post! You really a great help to those in need.

  • Ciao dolce Lua,
Hai consigli per me? Ti ringrazio in anticipo. Baci, una tua;fan! :*

    Thnk you so much. kisses

This really helps! Question: do you use hairspray, too, to keep your curls longer?

Thanks to you I discovered rosemary oil, I should try it !

My hair is also a reverse ombré dye but burgundy to brown to strawberry blonde, my hair gets dey easy, to save from wearing the oil all day I use olive oil, conditioner and honey, mix well, apply to hair, put a shower cap on and blow dry for 15-20 min. Your hair will be stunningly shinny and soft

  • Thank you for posting this! My hair is very thin and damaged (from all the dyeing and perming) and I’m really desperate to look for products that’ll make my hair look healthy again. Thank you again for sharing this! Gonna try these products out soon. ♡

  • Will definitely be giving the Rosemary oil a go! My hair used to be in absolutely awful condition and refused to grow, so I made some major changes in my hair routine – but the thing I have noticed that has helped the most is coconut oil. Seriously, this stuff works miracles. I leave it on over night when I plan to was my hair the next day, and it has gotten my hair back in good condition and it id finally growing! Would recommend you giving it a go!

Thanks for your hair tips and the results of the products. I come from Lower Austria and will test even once the products. I’ve always had red hair but the color did not last long. After bleaching my hair, the red color only lasted 1 week. (I dye my hair myself).
I’m curious how the products work.
I love your blog, thank you exist. (Sorry for my bad english)

    XOXO

  • Hello :) I was just wondering if you still are doing a light bleach before applying your red dye? Or are you achieving the vibrant color with adore dye alone? And how often do you have to touch it up? Thank you for another amazing post I always enjoy them. Happy holidays xoxo

  • Hola Lua!

  • Lua,

By any chance do you ever use dry shampoo? You know, so that you won’t have to wash your hair often? Just wondering. Love your blog, you flawless queen :*

    Hola, Lua!
